About the Game

Dame is the classic diagonal board strategy game played on an 8 × 8 grid. Each player commands twelve pieces that move diagonally forward across the dark squares. Capture opponent pieces by jumping over them, chain multiple jumps in a single turn, and promote pieces to kings — which can move and capture in any diagonal direction.

With a history stretching back thousands of years across numerous cultures, draughts-style games are among the oldest competitive board games in the world. The browser version brings the full classic ruleset to any screen — now coming to GameZone as a free online game, no download or signup required.

Game Mechanics

Standard pieces move one step diagonally forward. A capture is made by jumping over an opponent's adjacent piece into the empty cell beyond — the captured piece is removed from the board. If a capture is available, it must be taken (mandatory capture rule). Multiple captures in a single turn are completed as a chain.

When a piece reaches the opponent's back row it is promoted to a king, marked distinctly, and gains the ability to move and capture diagonally in all four directions. The game is won by capturing all opponent pieces or leaving the opponent with no legal move.
